Maggie's Organics and Once Again Nut Butter collaborate efforts in Central America

Two US-Based fair trade companies share soil and support for organic farmers in Nicaragua

YPSILANTI, MI, October 21, 2011 /Lifestyle PR News/ -- This is a great story about two unique and independent companies that sell organic food and clothing within the natural products industry. In a unique and symbiotic relationship, Maggie's Organics and Once Again Nut Butter purchase from eleven agricultural cooperatives in Nicaragua, sharing the same soil and providing livelihoods for over 2000 farmers.

Organic farmers utilize planned crop rotation in order to ensure that soil nutrients remain intact. Crop rotation encourages healthy soil as well as sustainability for farmers. In this instance, organic cotton for Maggie's is grown one season, and sesame seeds for Once Again is grown the next. The third year in this rotation is usually a legume or yucca crop, which the farmers sell within Nicaragua.

Once Again began working in Nicaragua in 1995 with a non-profit service organization Jubilee House Community. Maggie's met Jubilee four years later, and thanks to the existing organic sesame farmers, a partnership was formed to add cotton to their crop rotation. In addition to establishing a 100% worker-owned sewing cooperative, Maggie's and Jubilee worked together with the farmers to revive Nicaragua's dying cotton industry, converting it all to organic.

The number of rural family farmers involved in this partnership has grown to over 2,000. With greater yields and increased price for their crops, more farmers are coming into the program each year. By working together, both Once Again and Maggie's purchase high quality raw materials, while farmers sustain their local economies!

The next time you are shopping at your local food store or cooperative, consider a jar of Once Again Nut Butter and a pair of Maggie's socks. Chances are they came from the same farmer in Nicaragua.
