Dr. Martin Jugenburg of Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Institute Says Only 8% of Breast Cancer Patients Having Reconstruction in CANADA
Many Women Unaware Reconstructive Surgery An Option And Covered By Provincial Ministries Of Health
TORONTO, CANADA, October 23, 2011 /Lifestyle PR News/ -- When it comes to breast cancer, removing harmful tissues is only one part of the healing process. Many survivors consider reconstructive surgery an important step in re-establishing a sense of normality and self-confidence, and yet only 8 per cent of Canadian breast cancer patients opt for these procedures. Dr. Martin Jugenburg , plastic and reconstructive surgeon and many of his colleagues hope to change all that.

On October 19 is the Inagural National Breast Reconstruction Day (BRA-DAY). Many breast reconstruction surgeons and nurses across Canada will be hosting individual events in their hospitals. Dr. Jugenburg will be hosting a BRA-Day information event and T-SHIRT campaign at the Humber River Regional Hospital in Toronto. The goal for these events is to inform women who have, or will, undergo a lumpectomy or mastectomy of their options and urge them to consider the benefits of reconstructive surgery, to realize that this surgery is covered by provincial health insurance, as is the surgery on the other breast if surgery is required to create better breast symmetry ("balancing procedure").
Benefits of Breast Reconstruction:
• Gives women a sense of control
• Creates breast contour
• Improves breast symmetry
• Eliminates having to wear a prosthetic breast
• Improves body-image and self-esteem
• Returns body to what's familiar and comfortable
• Lessens the physical reminders of illness
• Re-establishes sense of normalcy
• Regain sense of femininity and sexuality
Three main types of breast reconstruction:
• The use of an implant to recreate the breast mound.
• Breast mound creation using tissue "borrowed" from another part of your body.
• The last type of reconstruction combines the use of both "borrowed" tissue from your back as well as an implant
New Developments in Breast Reconstruction:
Among the many reconstruction options there is now the NEW single-stage breast reconstruction technique. This is a specifically-designed tissue expanding implant - but unlike traditional expanders that require removal, these single-stage implants can be left in place, thus avoiding the need for follow-up surgery.
Fat grafting is another recent and exciting development which uses fat from the patient's body to rebuild the breast, correct small deformities, treat radiation injuries, and deliver rejuvenating stem cells to improve the quality of post-radiation tissues.
Reconstruction at the time of mastectomy is the preferred option. In addition to cosmetic benefits (immediate reconstrutions tend to look nicer) and the simplicity of having only one combined surgery rather than two separate procedure, there are also survival benefits to combined procedures. Recent research from The American Society of Plastic Surgery and the Canadian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery found that breast reconstruction immediately following a mastectomy is linked with significantly improved survival rates. In addition, the U.S. National Cancer Institute found a 26 percent reduction in mortality among those who underwent immediate reconstruction. They attributed this to improved sense of well-being.
"... Having the surgery has caused me to feel beautiful, attractive and content again. It has absolutely changed my life for the better." 38 year old patient
'Together we can achieve our common vision, where all women needing breast cancer surgery will be offered information about the options for reconstructive breast surgery and be provided access to breast reconstruction in a safe and timely manner'. BRA-DAY
